What makes one person freeze when sudden violence erupts while another fights back? Why do some people take action when their lives are on the line while others become overwhelmed by fear? And more importantly, can you prepare yourself to respond before that moment ever comes?
Tony Blauer, one of the world’s foremost experts on surviving sudden violence, joins me for an extraordinary episode of Survival Dispatch TV that tackles those questions and a whole lot more.

Tony has spent more than 45 years studying human behavior under extreme stress, developing training methods that have changed how military personnel, law enforcement officers, and civilians prepare for violent encounters. He’s the creator of the SPEAR System and KNOW FEAR, two programs built around understanding fear, recognizing danger, and using the body’s natural protective responses to survive.
His experience includes training members of Army Special Forces, Naval Special Warfare, the Secret Service, and Federal Air Marshals. Following 9/11, Tony also trained the instructors responsible for teaching FedEx pilots how to defend themselves against violence inside an aircraft cockpit.
That background makes him uniquely qualified to examine one of the most terrifying situations imaginable: a violent attack inside the cockpit of a commercial airliner.
During Flydubai Flight 1073, the co-pilot stabbed the captain behind a locked cockpit door, putting everyone aboard in immediate danger. As the aircraft descended and passengers struggled to understand what was happening, several men made a decision that would change the outcome.
They fought back.
These weren’t trained counterterrorism operators or professional security personnel. They were ordinary passengers who suddenly found themselves confronting a potentially deadly situation thousands of feet above the ground.
Three men ultimately subdued the attacker, using headphone cords to restrain him. Their actions helped prevent an already dangerous situation from becoming something far worse.
But here’s what makes this story so important.
Everyone aboard that aircraft experienced fear. The passengers who fought back were afraid, too. So what separated the men who acted from those who didn’t?
That’s where Tony’s expertise becomes invaluable.
During our discussion, Tony explains what happens inside the human brain and body when violence erupts without warning. We examine the instinctive responses that can cause people to freeze, hesitate, retreat, or fight, and why those reactions aren’t nearly as simple as most people believe.
One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation concerns something Tony calls indignation. It’s the moment fear can turn into a powerful determination to stop someone from hurting you or the people around you.
Instead of simply telling people to be brave, Tony explains how understanding fear and changing your relationship with it can make a tremendous difference when seconds count.

We also examine the actual footage and passenger interviews from the Flydubai incident, walking through the sequence of events and discussing the decisions that mattered most. Tony brings decades of firsthand training experience to the analysis, explaining what the passengers did, why their actions mattered, and what ordinary people can learn from their response.
This isn’t just about airline security or surviving a hijacking attempt. The lessons apply to virtually any situation involving sudden violence, whether you’re traveling, shopping, attending church, or simply going about your daily routine.
You can own the best firearms, carry the finest equipment, and spend thousands of dollars on preparedness. But none of that guarantees you’ll respond effectively when violence comes without warning.

Your ability to recognize what’s happening, manage your fear, and make a decision under pressure may be the most important survival skill you ever develop.
Tony has dedicated his professional life to helping people understand exactly that. His insights go far beyond the usual self-defense advice, and this conversation provides a rare opportunity to learn directly from someone who has spent more than four decades studying what actually happens when human beings confront violence.
Whether you’ve trained for years or have never taken a self-defense class, there’s something in this episode you need to hear.
Because when violence finds you, you won’t have time to start figuring out how you’re going to respond.
